Our Lady of the Bowed Head
Sweet Embrace
What could be more wonderful than the sweet embrace of a mother and child? Let us think of the most wonderful child, the Infant Jesus, as we embark on this spiritual journey through eastern and middle Europe. The devotion to the Holy Child Jesus has been a dearly-held tradition of the Catholic Church for a very long time. This devotion is a veneration of our Lord's sacred Infancy. There have been any saints who expressed their very strong devotion to the Divine Child, notably St. Therese of the Child Jesus, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua, and St. Teresa of Avila.

Day 3: Today we start off in lovely Vienna, where we journey to the Silbergasse area to the Church of the Holy Family and the Carmelite Cloister, wherein we may witness the painting of "Our Lady of the Bowed Head". This miraculous oil painting was rescued from a rubbish heap and restored in 1610 by Ven. Dominic of Jesus and Mary, of the Order of Discalced Carmelites. According to the testimony of Ven. Dominic, Our Lady spoke to him, promising, "All those who implore my protection, devoutly honoring this picture, will obtain their petitions, and will receive many graces. Moreover, I shall hearken in a special manner to the prayers that shall be addressed to me for the relief of the souls in purgatory."

Basilica and Shrine of Our Lady of Mariazell We continue on via Mariazell to visit the Basilica and Shrine of Our Lady of Mariazell. The statue of Our Lady of Mariazell has been venerated since the late 12th century.

We proceed to Mondsee, the setting of the movie The Sound of Music, made famous by Julie Andrews. Walk through this little quaint village and visit the wedding church. We travel on to Salzburg. Dinner and overnight in Salzburg.
Day 4: Today, we will stroll through the pedestrian area of the Altstadt, Salzburg's old town, which includes the Dom Cathedral, the Cemetery and Catacombs of St. Peter, Kapitel Square, Residence Square, Market Square, Getreidegasse (Mozart's birthplace) and through Mirabell Gardens. Then we celebrate Mass at the Church of the Infant Jesus.

Festung Hohensalzburg The rest of the afternoon is free to do as you please. You may want to take the funicular (on your own) up to the massive Festung Hohensalzburg, the city's fortress, built in 1077, to view the magnificent Austrian alps and the flatlands of Salzkammergut. Don't leave Salzburg without trying their very own chocolate Furst, which cannot be found anywhere else! Dinner and overnight in Salzburg.
Day 5: Our journey continues as we cross the border into Germany, stopping enroute at Ettal, home of a Benedictine Abbey with the marble statue of Ettal Madonna on the high altar of the church, where we will celebrate Mass. Even today the focal point of the monastery is Our Lady of Ettal, a gift of the Emperor Louis IV; the date of the endowment is the 28th of April 1330. Then we proceed through southern Germany to the village of Oberammergau, home of the Passion Play, performed only once every 10 years. It was first performed in 1634 by the inhabitants of the village. Dinner and overnight in Oberammergau.
Day 6: After breakfast, enjoy a day excursion to Altotting, Marktl Am Inn and Munich. The shrine of Our Lady of Altotting houses the miraculous wooden statue of Our Lady holding the Christ Child on her right arm. We will also visit the magnificent figure of Our Lady with the Golden Horse kept in the treasury. Made in the early 15th century of solid gold, it is regarded as one of the finest pieces of medieval goldsmith's work in Europe. It depicts a Virgin and Child surrounded by angels and children; at her feet is a little lamb among flowers made of gemstones. An unusual feature of the shrine is a collection of 24 human hearts kept in silver urns in the Holy Chapel, bequeathed by rulers of Bavaria who wished to express their love for Our Lady. We then proceed to the village of Marklt Am Inn, the birthplace of Joseph Ratzinger, now known as Pope Benedict XVI. Then to Munich for a panoramic city tour. Dinner and overnight in Oberammergau.
Day 7: Full day at leisure. An optional excursion to the Neuschwanstein Castle will be offered. Enroute, we will celebrate Mass at the Baroque Weiskirche, also called the "Church in the Meadow". Dinner and overnight in Oberammergau.

The statue, carved in wood, of the Madonna holding the Infant Jesus on Her left arm, has been the object of great devotion for over a thousand years and many miracles have been attributed to its intercession.
