Mystical Peru
Peru gave us two of the great mystics of the church, Saint Rose of Lima and Saint Martin de Porres; their lives have come to signify deep devotion and selfless charity for those in need. Peru is also home to the ancient civilization of the Incas and their awe-inspiring, monumental architecture. On this journey, we tour Lima, home of the saints, Cusco, a modern day metropolis and once capital city of the Inca Empire and Machu Picchu, the sacred citadel of the Incas, as we discover Mystical Peru.
Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu
8 Days - Peru
Day 1: Depart the USA on an international flight to Lima, Peru. Upon arrival, our Tour Director welcomes us and we are transferred to our hotel for a good rest. Overnight in Lima.
Day 2: After breakfast, we start our tour visiting the historical center of Lima, including the Plaza Mayor, Government Palace, the Cathedral, the Archbishops Palace and the catacombs inside the Church of San Francisco where we will celebrate Mass. The two patron saints of Lima who are buried in this church are St. Rose and Dominican lay brother St. Martin de Porres. St. Rose of Lima, also the patron saint of the Philippines, was named Isabel at birth, but was called "Rose" for her red cheeks. She was very beautiful and as a child had a great reverence and pronounced love for God and all things relating to Him. She was specially devoted to the Infant Jesus and His Blessed Mother before whose altar she spent hours. As a young girl she gave her life to prayer and mortification. St. Martin de Porres, the patron saint of the sick and the poor, mostly children, of Peru, and against racism, had a reputation as a healer; people flocked to him for renewal of the spirit, but he never grew tired of this ministry. Overnight in Lima.
Day 3: Early morning departure to the airport to catch our flight to Cusco. Upon arrival, we will allow ourselves to adjust to the very high altitude of this quaint city. As we reach our hotel, the staff welcomes us with coca tea which also helps us further get used to the altitude. Then we start our city tour of Cusco, visiting the archeological sites of Sacsayhuaman, Qenko, PucaPucara and Tambomachay and the famous Temple of the Sun, Qoricancha, or the "Enclosure of Gold", then to the main Cathedral with the Mestizant Art of the 16th and 17th century. Overnight in Cusco.
Day 4: Early morning rise to transfer to the train station for our "switchback ride on the train" going to Aguas Calientes, the stepping-off point to Machu Picchu. Enjoy the view as we reach to the top of the mountain. Upon arrival, the buses are waiting to take us to the Sacred Citadel of Machu Picchu. During the guided tour marvel at the different sections of the Citadel. We will have lunch at the restaurant of the Sanctuary Lodge Hotel, then take the bus back down to our hotel in Aguas Calientes. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore this quaint provincial town on our own. Overnight in Aguas Calientes.
Day 5: Be ready for another early morning wake up call to take the bus to go back to the Citadel to enjoy the sunrise! Machu Picchu was built in the classical Inca style, with polished dry-stone walls. Its primary buildings are the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. These are located in what is known by archaeologists as the Sacred District of Machu Picchu.

The rest of the morning is free to have optional hikes to Huayna Mountain, the Inka Bridge or just enjoy the magnificent view of the valley and river below in a panoramic scene. In the afternoon, we find our way to Ollantaytambo, a massive citadel located 50 kilometres from Machu Picchu; the citadel served as both a temple and a fortress. We return back to Cusco. Overnight in Cusco.
Day 6: Free day in Cusco to do as we wish and take in the sights. Overnight in Cusco.
Day 7: After breakfast, we depart for the airport to catch our flight back to Lima. Upon arrival, we transfer to the hotel and then we visit the Gold Museum and its impressive collection of Inka and Pre-inka artefacts. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure. Walk through the bazaars that sell beautiful paintings of Our Blessed Mother, or bring home some souvenirs of Peru for the loved ones. Overnight in Lima, unless the flight departs very early, as in 1:00 AM in the morning (depending on the airline used).
Day 8: We bid farewell to Peru as our flight leaves for the United States with a same day arrival.
