The "Angelus" Prayer
This prayer is traditionally said three times a day: 6:00 AM, noon and 6:00 PM accompanied by the tolling of bells to commemorate the wonder of the Annunciation and the Incarnation. This ringing consists usually of nine peals in groups of three, sometimes followed by a series of even peals. The bells also summoned the workers from the fields in days before clocks and watches. It is interesting to note that the custom continues in our time; in Baguio City, the Philippines, the whole city stops, including traffic, at 6 PM for a brief moment to say the Angelus silently.
Historically, the Angelus is associated with peace as when Pope Callistus III ordered the daily ringing of bells at midday with the praying of three Hail Marys for the success of the Crusade.
The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary:
And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.
Hail Mary...
Behold the handmaid of the Lord:
Be it done unto me according to your word.
Hail Mary...
And the Word was made flesh:
And dwelt among us.
Hail Mary...
Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech You, O Lord, Your grace into our hearts; that as we have known the incarnation of Christ, your Son by the message of an angel, so by His passion and cross we may be brought to the glory of His resurrection. Through the same Christ, our Lord. Amen.
